미국에서 올해로 25주년 거주하고 있는 필자는 한국이 그리울 때마다 나의 소중한 공간인 이곳을 통해서 하소연도 하고 한국분들과 블로그 친구로 연결되어서 마음을 다스리곤 했다. 그런 나에게 변화가 일어나기 시작했다. 시작 시초는 어느 분이 나의 블로그에 우리 방탄소년단들이 비틀즈와 같다는 말에 화가 났었던 사건이 있었다. 그 당시 난 방탄소년단이 좋은 지도 왜 그들에 열광들 하는지도 몰랐다.
Whenever I miss Korea, I connect with Korean people as blog friends. Such a change began to occur to me. There was an incident at the beginning where I was angry when they said on my blog that BTS was like the Beatles. At that time, I didn't know if BTS was good or why they were so enthusiastic.
순간 난... 그건 실언이라 생각했었다. 그래서 반박하는 글을 올리곤 했었는데.. 지금 지나고 보니 부끄럽기 짝이 없다. 나름 음악에 대해서 자긍심을 가지고 리뷰글을 쓰고 특히 클래식 락이라면 모르는 밴드가 없을 정도로 그들의 노래에 심취해 있는 필자에게 방탄소년단과 비틀즈의 비교는 말도 안 되는 발언이라 생각했다. 그러나 나의 생각이 틀렸다. 그것을 증명해준 우리의 방탄소년단이었다.
At the moment I thought... ...that was a slip of the tongue. So I used to post refutations, but... I'm so ashamed now. That's what I felt then. I thought that the comparison between BTS and the Beatles was nonsense to me. I wrote reviews with pride about music, especially classical rock, and I am so absorbed in their songs that there are no bands that I don't know. But I was wrong. It was our BTS who proved it.
비틀즈가 60년대 미국에 첫 발을 내디뎠을 때 그들은 영국의 침공(British invasion)이라는 말을 스스럼없이 했다. 즉 영국인이 미국의 팝시장을 뒤흔들어 놓은 상황을 침공(invasion)이라는 단어를 썼던 것 같다. 오늘날 그 상황이 우리 방탄소년단에게 일어나고 있다. 바로 한국인의 침공(Korean invasion)이 되고 있었다. 그래서 난 그들의 비틀즈급 아이돌 지존으로 많은 사람의 사랑을 받을 거라는 확신이 있다. 이렇게 승승장구해나가는 그들의 모습을 단순히 유튜브나 트위트라는 미디어에 의존하고 있지만 그래도 좋다. 그들이 잘 있고 멋지게 행진하고 있다는 것을 알기 때문이다.
When The Beatles took their first step to the U.S. in the '60s, they said "British invasion" without hesitation. In other words, the British seem to have used the word "invasion" to shake up the American pop market. Today the situation is happening to BTS. It is becoming a Korean invasion. So I'm sure they'll be loved by a lot of people for their fans, called Army. They are now a top idol like The Beatles . While they are simply relying on the media called YouTube or Twitter for their success, it is still good. Because I know they are marching well and beautifully.
오늘 서문을 길게 늘어놓은 이유는 내가 미국 생활을 하면서 직장을 두 번째로 일하게 된 것이 대체 교사직이었는데 이것은 초등, 중, 고 학교를 찾아가서 그날 결근한 선생님을 대체해서 일일교사가 되는 일이었다. 물론 아이들은 사랑스럽다. 난 그런 아이들과 아미 식구라는 이유로 금방 친해지고 친구가 될 수가 있었다.
The reason for the lengthy preamble today was that my second job in the U.S. was as a substitute teaching job, in which I go to elementary, middle and high schools and replace the absent teacher on that day. Of course, the children are lovely. I was able to be friends quickly because of those children and the BTS Army family.

지민의 우는 모습이 담겨진 동영상은(8:30) 2019년 5월 5일에 있었던 그들의 로즈 볼 콘서트장에서 52,000명이 보는 가운데 펼쳐진 공연이었다.
첫 번째 만났던 아미.
정말 말도 많고 탈도 많았던 고등학교에 대체교사로 하루 일을 나가게 되었다. 필자가 일하게 된 교실의 환경은 정말 대책이 안 서는 반이었고 조용히 하라는 나의 말을 무시하고 그냥 넌 떠들어라.. 난 할 말 한다 라는 식이었다. 특히 동양인라서 아이들이 비꼬면서 발음을 흉내를 내는 철부지 같은 행동도 보이고 날 민망하게 까지 했다. 그래서 학교 교무실에 연락을 했더니 학생주임이 방문해서 문제아를 반에서 퇴출시키고 다른 반으로 이동시켜 주었다. 그제야 조용히 자습을 하게 되었는데, 가만히 지켜보니 여고생이 방탄의 노래를 듣고 있지 않는가. 그래서 옆에 가서 귀띔하듯이 말했다.
어머.. 너 아미 식구니?
네.. 선생님 아미 아세요? 방탄소년단요.
그럼 알다마다.. 나도 아미 식구란다.
정말요..
그 순간 우리는 말이 필요 없었다. 서로 껴안고 반가운 인사를 나누었다. 그래서 그녀는 나의 아미 친구가 되었다.
두 번째 아미의 만남
이번에는 문제아들이 많다고 소문이 자자한 이곳의 중학교 대체교사로 갔었다. 그곳에서 한여중생이 나를 빤히 보더니 한국이라고 확신을 한 모양이었다. 그리고 나에게 방탄소년단 아느냐고 말했다. 그래서 난 아미 식구라고 했더니, 자신도 그렇다면서.. 그녀가 내게 한말이 잊히지 않는다.
지민이가 살고 있는 한국분이 대체교사로 오셔서 너무 좋아요. 반가워요. 그리고 사랑해요.
알아봤더니 나와 같이 지민 덕후였다. 그래서 서로 반가움의 인사를 눈빛으로 뜨겁게 나누었다.
세 번째 아미의 만남
온라인 도시의 영웅(City of Heroes) 게임에서 같이 사냥을 하던 크리스가 아미 식구란다. 그래서 너무 좋은 나머지 게임을 하다가 채팅창에 온통 방탄소년단에 관한 이야기로 가득 채웠던 일이 기억난다. 그리고 그는 방탄소년단 책도 영어로 나왔다면서 찾아서 보라고 권했다. 역시 우리 아미는 말을 하지 않아도 통했다. 그것이 진정 방탄소년단의 파워이며 우리 아미 식구의 DNA라는 사실을 깨닫는다.
네 번째 아미의 만남
우리 막내 나린이의 친구가 연락이 왔다. 나린이는 엄마의 지민 덕후질을 친구에게 고자질을 했다. 알고 봤더니 그 친구가 바로 슈가 덕후였다. 하하하 그래서 우리는 아미 식구임을 한순간에 알아버렸다. 그리고 스스럼없이 친구가 되어 버렸다.
이렇게 필자는 아미 친구와의 만남은 계속 진행형이다. 오늘도 대체 교사직을 나가야 하는데, 그곳에서 만날 아미 식구들을 생각하면 가슴부터 뛰기 시작한다.
BTS (방탄소년단) '봄날 (Spring Day)
The first Army I met.
I got to work as a substitute teacher at a high school class that was really talkative and ill-behaved. The classroom environment where I came to work was really half-out of control and ignoring my advice to be quiet and just made noise. I tell you what I said. "Especially because I'm an Asian, I've seen some kind of rude behavior in which children are sarcastic and mocking, and even embarrassing me. So when I contacted the school's office. The principal visited me and removed the troubled child from the class and moved him to another class. Then I started to study on my own quietly, and I noticed that a high school girl was listening to the song of "Bulletproof". So I went to the side and said as if I were a helper.
Oh, you're ARMY's family?
Yes, do you know Army too? I mean BTS.
As you know... I'm the Army family.
Really?
At that moment we didn't need words. We hugged each other and exchanged welcome greetings. So she became my ARMY friend.
Second Army Meeting
This time, I went to a middle school substitute teacher here who is rumored to have many troubled children. A middle school girl must have looked at me and was convinced me that I was Korean. "Do you know BTS?" So I said "I'm the Army family, and you said correctly." I can't forget what she said to me.
I'm so happy that a Korean fan of Jimin is here as an substitute teacher. Nice to meet you. And I love you.
When I recognized it, it was Jimin Deokhu, just like me. So we exchanged pleasantries with our eyes wide.

Third Army Meeting
The Army family is the one who hunts together in the online City of Heroes game. So I was so happy that I remember the whole chat room filled with stories about BTS. He also said that BTS' book was also in English, urging them to look for it. As expected, our ARMY worked even without speaking. I realize that it is truly the power of BTS and the DNA of our Army family.
Fourth Army Meeting
My youngest, Narin, told her friend all about her mother's ARMY. It turned out that the friend was a fan of Sugar. Hahaha! So we knew at a moment that the ARMY were in the family, and I became friends without hesitation.
As such, my meeting with ARMY's friend continues. I have to leave for another substitute teaching job today, and when I think of the Army family I'll meet there, my heart starts racing.

인형 사달라고 했다가 큰 핀잔을 딸로부터 들었다. 하지만 내 돈주가 사는걸 누가 뭐라고 하겠는가. 난 꼭 지민 인형을 이번에 살려고 한다. ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 인형을 구입한 후기도 올리는 날이 하루속히 오기를 기대한다.
