1984년 에티오피아에서는 기근이 찾아왔고 그래서 많은 남녀노소 할 것이 없이 생명을 빼앗아 가는 무참한 광경을 영국의 공영방송국인 BBC가 방송으로 충격적인 사건을 보여주었다. 이것을 지켜본 음악 프로듀서가 있었다. 그의 이름은 밥 겔도프였고 프로듀스로 활략한 유명한 분이셨다. 순간 그는 뭔가 해야겠다고 생각했다. 그래서 스팅에게 전화를 했고 자초지종을 설명하면서 음악인들이 음악으로 그들을 돕자고 했다. 그렇게 시작되었던 작은 불씨가 전 세계인들을 주목시키게 된다. 처음으로 노래 가사말을 보고 스팅은 비참한 생각만 가득했고 어떻게 해야 할지를 몰랐다고 그 당시를 회고했다. 그리고 U2의 보노도 참여하기로 했는데, 그에게 주어진 노래 파트 부분이 마음에 들지 않는다고 거부를 했다고 한다. 하지만 자신을 위한 것이 아니라 아프리카의 기근으로 죽어가는 아이들을 생각하면서 그 파트를 불렀다고 한다. 

보노가 불렀던 파트 부분은 

"We'll, tonight, thank God, it's them Instead of you"

(우리는 오늘 밤 하나님께 감사드려요 당신이 당하는 것이 아니라 그들이 겪고 있어서 말이죠.)

에고.. 나라도 싫어했을 파트 부분이었던 것 같다. 기독교 신자로 알려진 보노가 부르기에는 너무 직역적 가사말이 아니었나 생각된다. 그래도 훗날 이렇게 노래가 완성되어 구호자금을 모금하는데 일조원을 했었다.

그리고 컬처 클럽의 보이 조지는 리코딩을 못할 뻔했다는 이야기도 전해져 온다. 밥 겔도프가 전화를 해서 부랴 리코딩장에 도착했는데 저녁 8시가 넘었던 시간이었다고 한다. 도착하자 바로 녹음을 하자고 했단다. 결국 술 한잔 하고 하면 안 되겠냐는 말에 거절당하고 ㅋㅋㅋ 바로 녹음을 한 파트가 절묘한 타이밍에 맞추어 간절함이 전달되는 노래를 할 수가 있었던 것 같다.

스팅은 리코딩을 하는 순간 아프리카의 기근으로 죽어가는 생명들을 생각하면서 씁쓸한 마음으로 리코딩을 마칠 수가 있었다. 전설적인 스팅이 함께 했고 U2 보노가 함께 했던 음악인들의 자선기금 노래는 성공적이었다.

In the original 1984 version (organized to highlight the Ethiopian famine then), the lyrics read: “Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears”, but these were replaced with “where a kiss of love can kill you and there’s death in every tear.” (위키 인용글)

소외된 지구의 어느 아프리카에 살고 있는 누군가를 위해서 노래의 힘을 빌려서 그들을 도왔고 그 작은 불씨가 큰 힘을 발휘하게 되어 많은 사람들이 구호자금에 힘을 보탰다. 우리는 하나로 뭉칠 때 더 큰 힘을 발휘할 수 있다는 사실을 보여준 역사적 사건이자 오래도록 기억에 남았던 음악인들의 따스함이 전달되었던 프로젝트였다.
