에티오피아 레스토랑

오늘은 가족과 함께 에티오피아 레스토랑(Uchenna Ethiopian Restaurant)을 방문했습니다. 막내딸 나린이가 태어난 나라가 에티오피아입니다. 나린이 25개월 때 에티오피아에서 입양한 귀한 딸입니다. 나린이는 대학교 졸업하면 꼭 한 번은 에티오피아를 방문하겠다고 합니다. 그녀의 정체성과 관련되어 태어난 곳이 어디인지 알고 싶은 모양입니다.

Today we visited an Ethiopian restaurant (Uchenna Ethiopian Restaurant) with the family. Our youngest daughter, Narin, was born in Ethiopia. She is our precious daughter, adopted from Ethiopia when she was 25 months old. Narin says she wants to visit Ethiopia at least once after she graduates from college. She seems to want to know where she was born as part of understanding her identity.

막내딸과 함께 식사를 했어요. 음식점 주인아주머니는 나이가 드셨지만, 에티오피아 출신으로 미국으로 입양된 아이들을 상대로 직접 가르치고 이곳에 적응하게끔 도와주었다고 하네요. 지금은 연세가 있으셔서 직접 아이들을 도와주고 하는 일은 못하지만, 그녀의 열정은 높이 사주고 싶어요.

I ate with my youngest daughter. The restaurant owner is elderly but originally from Ethiopia; she used to teach and help Ethiopian children adopted into the U.S. adjust to their new lives. Now that she’s older she can’t help children directly, but I deeply admire her passion and dedication.

이 식당은 사진 촬영이 금지되어 있어요. 식당 안이 참 아늑하고 그림으로 가득한 벽의 장식을 보여 드리지 못해서 안타깝네요. 이곳은 예약 손님만 받는 곳입니다. 식당의 아주머니께 나린을 소개했더니, 금방 알아보시더라고요. 에티오피아에서 온 아이라는 걸 이미 아셨다고 하네요. 민족에 흐르는 피는 못 속이나 봅니다.

This restaurant does not allow photography. The interior is cozy and the walls are full of paintings, so I’m sorry I couldn’t show you. This place only accepts reservations. When I introduced Narin to the owner, she recognized her immediately and said she knew Narin was from Ethiopia. You can’t hide the blood of your people.

나린이 어릴 때 입양을 했다고 하니, 우리 부부의 얼굴을 번갈아 보시더니 참 잘했다고 칭찬을 해주십니다. 마지막 인사를 하고 나오려는데, 꼭 안아 주시면서 아름다운 숙녀로 잘 키웠다고 격려를 하십니다. 다른 분들보다 직접 에티오피아 출신의 분으로부터 인사를 들으니 마음이 새롭더군요. 막내의 반항기를 지나서 지금은 뉴멕시코 국립 대학교에서 수화를 공부하고 있어요.

When I told her we had adopted Narin as a baby, the owner looked from my husband to me and praised our decision. As we were leaving, she hugged Narin and encouraged her, saying we had raised a beautiful young lady. Hearing those words directly from someone from Ethiopia felt especially meaningful. After a brief rebellious phase, our youngest is now studying sign language at the University of New Mexico.

예쁜 나린이 속이 아주 깊은 딸입니다. 얼마나 감사한지요. 매일 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 아무런 수고 없이 선물로 예쁜 딸을 주셨기 때문이지요. 꿈을 펼치고 더 넓은 세상을 체험하는 딸이 되기를 바랍니다. 특히 나린이 삶이 주님과 동행하는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.

Our sweet Narin is a daughter with a deep heart. I am so grateful every day to God for blessing us with her—such a precious gift given without our effort. I pray she will pursue her dreams and experience the wider world, and especially that each day of her life will be walked closely with the Lord.

인제라라고 (Injera) 에티오피아 빵이라고 하는데요. 좀 특이했습니다.

Injera (인제라) is an Ethiopian flatbread — it's unique and has a distinctive spongy texture.

The restaurant owner is a very kind person.

이렇게 음식이 나오는데요. 손을 사용해서 인제라에다 여러 가지 양념이 되어 있는 재료를 쌈 싸서 먹습니다. 저기 보이는 인제라(빵) 쌈으로 싸서 먹어요. 빵이 스펀지처럼 양념을 흡수해서 먹습니다.

The food is served family‑style. You use your hand to scoop up various seasoned dishes and wrap them in injera (the spongy flatbread) before eating. The injera soaks up the sauces, making each bite flavorful.
