산울림 1집 앨범리뷰

산울림은 김창완, 김창훈, 김창익 삼 형제로 이루어진 대한민국의 록 밴드이다. 기타와 보컬은 첫째 김창완, 베이스는 둘째 창훈, 드럼을 막내인 창익이 맡았다. 대한민국에서 대표적인 록 그룹이며 1970년대 말 1980년대 초로 이어지는 그룹사운드 시대를 연 선구자이기도 하다. 한국 록 역사에 한 획을 긋고, 70-80년대 한국을 대표하는 록 밴드로서 싸이키델릭 록, 아트록 등 여러 록 음악과 심지어 동요까지 소화해냈다. 산울림의 멤버이자 3형제 중 막내였던 김창익이 2008년 1월 캐나다 밴쿠버에서 제설작업 도중 사고로 사망하게 되었다. Sanulrim is a South Korean rock band consisting of three brothers, Kim Chang-wan, Kim Chang-hoon and Kim Chang-ik. Guitar and vocals are by the oldest, Kim Chang-wan, bass by the second oldest, Chang-hoon, and drum by the youngest Chang-ik. It is a leading rock group in South Korea and a pioneer of the rock genre sound that stretches from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. It marks a milestone in Korean rock history and played a number of styles of rock music, including Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock and even Progressive Rock, representing Korea in the 1970s and 80s. Kim Chang-ik, a member of Sanwoolim and the youngest of the three brothers, was killed in an accident in January 2008 during snow removal work in Vancouver, Canada. (Wiki Quote)

한국의 락 역사를 뒤집어 놨던 바로 그 문제작이 되었던 산울림의 1집 이야기를 할까 한다. 산울림은 삼 형제로 구성된 한국의 락이라는 장르에 도전했던 실험 정신이 강했던 그룹이었다. 그들이 대학교 다닐 당시에 내놓았던 앨범이었고 노래 가사말은 큰형인 김창환이 대부분을 썼다. 그리고 중요한 것은 이 앨범에서 아트 록 사운드가 보인다. 2집으로 가면 더 강렬해진 싸이키델릭 록 사운드를 체험하게 된다. 1집 앨범에서는 실험적으로 도전하는 형식으로서 특정 컨셉은 없었다. 아주 안정적 리듬으로 구성되어 편안한 느낌을 준다. 김창완의 보컬 음색이 맑고 청아한 느낌을 안겨다 준다.

Sanulrim, consisting of three brothers, was a group that had a strong experimental mind that challenged the genre of Korean rock. It began with an album they released when they were in college, and the lyrics of the songs were mostly written by their elder brother, Kim Chang-hwan. What's important is that we see art rock sound on this album. If you go to your second album, you will experience a more intense Psychedelic Rock sound. In the first album, there was no particular concept as an experimental form of challenge. It is composed of very stable rhythms and gives a relaxed feeling. Kim Chang-wan's vocal tone is bright and clear.

어떻게 보면 락이라는 장르와는 어울리지 않을 것 같은데도 너무나 대조적으로 잘 궁합이 맞는 그런 사운드와 보컬이었다. 김창완 씨의 보컬의 음색을 따라가듯이 연주하는 리듬기타는 흥을 돋우기도 하고 애절한 마음도 들게 했다. 음악은 어느 분위기를 살리느냐에 따라서 색다르게 다가온다.

In a way, it was a sound and vocals that fit well, in contrast to the genre of rock. The rhythmic guitar playing, as if to follow the tone of Kim Chang-wan's vocals, was both exciting and heartbreaking. Music comes in a different way depending on which atmosphere it creates.

산울림의 앨범 아트를 보면 김창완 씨의 아이디어로 이렇게 만들어졌다고 한다. 예술적 재능도 타고난 사람인 것 같다. 싱어송 라이터에다 미술가에다 연기자에다 어디 못하는 것이 뭔지 모르겠다. 모든 분야를 잘 이해하고 능력을 발휘하는 능력자 이신 것 같았다.

According to Sanulrim’s album art, it was created from Kim Chang-wan’s ideas. I think his musical talent also includes artistic talent. There is nothing he can't do as a singer-songwriter, artist, and actor. He seemed to be an able man who understands and exerts his ability in all areas.

처음 김창완은 동생의 앨범 제작 제의를 받았을 당시 회사에 면접이 있었던 날이라고 했다. 그는 면접은 가지 않고 일생에 한번 일지도 모르는 음악을 선택한 것이 뮤지션의 길로 들어서게 했던 것이다. 이런 것을 보면 선택이라는 것이 아주 중요하다는 것을 알게 된다. 그 당시 김창완이 음악 리코딩을 하지 않고 취직을 하러 면접을 봤다면 오늘날 산울림은 탄생되지 않았을 것이다.

In the beginning, Kim Chang-wan said it was the day he had an interview with a company that he offered to produce his younger brother's album. He didn't go to interviews and chose music. That might have been a once-in-a-lifetime thing that opened the doors for him as a musician. When you look at these things, you find that choice is very important. Had Kim Chang-wan interviewed for a job without recoding music at that time, Sanulrim would not have been born today.

이렇게 한 개인의 작은 희생이 따라준 앨범 제작이었고, 그 당시 스튜디오는 오늘날에 비하면 초라하기 그지없었다고 한다. 뭐 하나 제대로 된 것이 없었지만, 우여곡절 끝에 1집 앨범 제작을 마치게 된다. 이것을 통해서 세상에 산울림이라는 그룹이 있다는 것을 제대로 각인시켰다.

It was the production of an album that was followed by a person’s small sacrifice, and the studio at that time was said to be shabby compared to today. Nothing worked out right, but after many ups and downs, he finished producing his first album. Through this, Sanulrim was born.

산울림의 노래는 들어 보면 여러 가지 복합적인 감정들을 쏟아내는 하나이 폭포수 같은 느낌을 받았다. 잔잔하고 강한 사운드의 힘찬 연주도 마음에 들었다. 마음을 달래주었던 그 시대의 노래었다.

When I heard the songs of Sanulrim, I felt like a waterfall that poured out a variety of mixed emotions. I also liked the powerful performance of calm and strong sound. It was a song of the time that soothed my mind.
