일단 그룹을 소개를 시작하기전에 펄잼의 90년대 초기 사진과 더불어 현재의 사진을 나열해봤다. 사진을 보아하니 세월의 무상함을 느끼게해준다. 보컬리스트의 아름다운 미소년의 모습은 어느듯 살아지고 지금은 50을 바라보는 나이가 되어버렸다. 세월이 흘러감에도 멋지게 늙어 가고 있는 멋진 뮤지션이 바로 펄잼이 아닌가한다. 세월을 헤아려줄수 있는 잔주름과 피부의 노화에도 불구하고 어쩌면 노래는 왜 이리도 성숙되고 더 멋져 보이는걸까. 2013년도 앨범으로 알려진 라이트 볼트는 정말 벼락을 맞을 많큼 큰 충격은 가져다 주지는 않았지만, 멋진 얼트의 노장의 모습으로 후배들에게 부끄럽지 않는 곡을 팬들에 선물로 안겨줬다. 요즘은 미국의 록의 스타일면에서 얼트가 여전히 왕좌의 자리에 있음을 알수 있다. 개인적으로 헤비메탈을 좋아하지만, 필자도 나이가 들어감에 따라서 음악도 다방면으로 듣게된다. 특히 얼트의 묘미는 그룹마다 특별한 기타리프트가 있어 독특함게 그런만면에 톡튀는듯 하면서도 그닥 강렬하지 않아서 듣는 사람들의 부담을 주지 않는다. 그래서 얼트록이 신세대에 잘 먹히는것 같다. 록의 탄생과 역사를 보면 얼트록는 아주 잛은 역사를 지니고 있다. 펄잼은 다른 얼트밴드와 달리 하드록의 깊은 뿌리를 알고 하드록을 기반으로 해서 얼트의 기본을 다진 밴드라고 보면된다. 그래서인지 연주의 감칠맛이 더 할말없이 풍긴다. 펄잼밴드의 주요 창립맴버는 꾸준히 밴드에 몸을 담고 있다. 아마도 밴드의 기둥이 버티고 있어서인지 그들은 여전히 건장하고
다국적으로 활통을 펼치며, 멋진 연주와 더불어 넘치는 록의 기운을 보여주고있다.
록을 사랑하는 그대여
한 순간 멋진 모습은 사라졌어도
여전히 음악으로 승화되어 멋진 리듬과 보컬로
