크리스마스 전통으로 하나가 된 가족

미국인은 개인주의가 발달되어 있지만, 가족의 소중함을 선호하는 나라이기도합니다. 크리스마스 날의 가족마다 색다른 전통을 만들어갑니다. 그 전통이 가족의 식구들에게 연결되어 하나로 모이는 집단적 결속력이 있습니다. 우리 가족의 크리스마스 전통을 이야기하려 합니다.

Americans are a nation with a strong sense of individualism, but they also value family. Each family creates its own Christmas traditions. These traditions connect relatives and create a shared bond that brings them together. I’d like to share my family’s Christmas traditions.

크리스마스 날이 되면 우리 가족은 세 가지의 일을 꼭 합니다. 첫째는 아침에 일어나자 선물 공개를 하는 일입니다. 선물은 크고 작고의 상관없이 서로에 대한 감사와 애증의 표현이기도 합니다. 둘째는 크리스마스 날에 찰리브라운 크리스마스를 꼭 봅니다. 가족이 하나가 되어 같이 보게 됩니다. 올해는 스웨덴에서 온 사위가 함께해서 가족적 분위기가 화기애 졌습니다.

There's a third thing my family does. On this day, only the men in the family gather together to prepare Christmas dinner. Instead, the women sit and read, shop online, or pursue their hobbies. Once the men have finished preparing the Christmas dinner, we eat together. This is a small act of kindness that a husband shows his wife once a year.

세 번째 우리 가족이 하는 일이 있습니다. 이 날은 가족의 구성원 중에 남자분만 모여서 크리스마스 만찬을 준비합니다. 대신 여자분은 앉아서 책을 보기나 인터넷 쇼핑 아니면 취미 활동을 합니다. 크리스마스 만찬이 남자분에 의해서 다 만들어지면 함께 식사를 합니다. 이 순간은 1년에 한 번 있는 남편이 아내에게 하는 작은 배려입니다.

There’s a third tradition: on this day only the men in the family gather to prepare Christmas dinner while the women read, shop online, or pursue hobbies. Once the men finish preparing the meal, we eat together—a small act of kindness the husband shows his wife once a year.

남편과 함께 결혼을 한지가 31년의 세월이 흘렀습니다. 강산이 3번은 변했을 동안에 우리 사랑도 성장되고 성숙한 성인의 모습으로 서 있음을 발견하는 순간입니다. 아름다운 것도 잠시이지만 하나님의 경외하는 여자는 칭찬을 받는다는 성경 구절이 생각이 납니다. 나중에 하늘나라 갔을 때, 하나님이 나를 보면서 참 잘했다고 칭찬을 받는 딸이 되고 싶습니다.

Thirty-one years have passed since I married my husband. While the mountains and rivers have changed, our love has grown and matured, and I now see that we have become adults. Beauty is fleeting, but the Bible verse about a woman who fears the Lord being praised comes to mind. When I finally reach heaven, God will look upon me and say, “You did a good job.”
