오늘 여기는 주일이라 교회를 다녀왔어요. 오늘 교회에서 크리스마스이브 예배를 하게 되었네요. 원래는 12월 24일이 크리스마스이브 예배를 보게 되는데요. 올해는 조금 바뀌어진 모습입니다. 미국교회를 남편과 함께 다닌 지 30년이 지났습니다. 처음 외국 교회에서 설교를 들으면 졸음이 오더라고요. 말을 이해가 되지 않으니 당연한 것이 아닌가 생각되네요. 이제는 영어 회화와 이해가 가능한 수준까지 와서 참 다행이라 생각해요.
Today is Sunday, so I went to church. We had a Christmas Eve service today. Normally Christmas Eve services are held on December 24, but this year things were a bit different. It's been 30 years since I started attending an American church with my husband. When I first heard a sermon in a foreign church, I felt drowsy — I couldn't understand the words. Now I'm so glad I've reached a level where I can converse in and understand English.
국제결혼하신 분들의 이야기를 들어보면 남편은 외국교회 한국여성분은 한국교회 이렇게 두 군데를 다닌다는 이야기를 많이 들었거든요. 저는 남편을 따라서 그냥 영어를 못 알아 들어도 같이 따라다녔어요. 그러다 보니 귀가 절로 열리더군요. 물론 오랜 외국 생활의 경험도 있었고, 한국인과 교류를 많이 하지 않는 것도 도움이 되었습니다.
When I hear stories about international marriages, I often hear that the husband attends a foreign church while the Korean wife attends a Korean church. I simply followed my husband even though I couldn't understand the English, and over time my ears naturally opened up. Of course, my long experience living abroad and not socializing much with other Koreans helped, too.
크리스마스이브는 경건한 찬송가를 빼놓을 수가 없습니다. 조용한 밤 이 노래를 피날레로 불렀어요. 목사님 설교도 아주 좋았고요. 목사님은 늘 에너지가 넘칩니다. 예전에 일본에서 선교사를 하다가 이곳 콜로라도 스프링스로 와서 일반 사역을 하신 거라고 하네요. 여러 가지 우여곡절 끝에 지금의 교회를 개척하게 되었는데요. 이제는 교인들이 2천 명이 넘는 중년교회로 자리 잡았습니다.
Christmas Eve wouldn’t be complete without a devotional hymn. We sang "Silent Night" as the finale. The pastor’s sermon was excellent—he’s always full of energy. I heard he was a missionary in Japan before coming to Colorado Springs to do general ministry. After many twists and turns, he founded the current church, which is now a mid‑sized congregation of over 2,000 members.

우리 막내아들도 멋진 정장을 입고 왔어요. 우리 식구가 같이 모여서 예배를 드리는 것이 축복이라 생각합니다. 내일이면 우리 큰딸이 스웨덴에서 옵니다. 크리스마스를 엄마, 아빠와 함께 보내기 위해서 먼 곳에서 오네요. 사위모습도 오랜만에 볼 것 같아 그냥 마음이 설렘입니다. 행복은 다른 것이 아니라, 이렇게 작은 것에서 찾아봅니다. 함께하고 웃고 서로를 사랑하면서 살아가는 모습이 진정한 행복이 아닐까요?
Our youngest son arrived in a nice suit. I feel blessed that our family is gathered together for worship. Tomorrow our eldest daughter will arrive from Sweden—she’s come from far away to spend Christmas with Mom and Dad. It’s been a while since I’ve seen my son-in-law, and I’m so excited. Happiness isn’t found in things but in the little moments: living together, laughing, and loving one another—that is true happiness.
