제목처럼 그렇다. 우리가 살아가면서 절대 일어나서는 안 되는 일을 경험한 체험자로서 글의 내용을 적어 볼까 한다. 외국에서 겪었던 체험 수기라 생각하면 된다. 오늘은 막내딸 나린 생일이었다. 그녀와 친구는 쇼핑몰에서 좋은 시간을 보내고 그녀를 픽업 하러 갔었다. 문제가 있는 사건은 이제부터 시작된다.
운전을 하고 가는데 빨간 엔진 모양의 아이콘이 깜빡거린다. 이상 신호를 느꼈지만 지금 사거리에 신호 대기를 하고 있는데 이런 황당한 상황이 발생한다. 차가 도로 한복판에 멈춤이 되었다. ㅠㅠ 사람들은 무슨 일이 일어났는지도 모르고 있었고. 내가 나가서 이야기해야 하는데 막상 나가면 달려오는 차에 치여 죽을 판이었다. 그렇게 노심초사하는 몇 분의 시간이 지난 후 백미러로 보니 한 미국인 남자분이 깜빡이 등을 켜고 우리의 차를 보호하고 있었다. 차에서 내려서 그 아저씨한테로 갔다. 차에서 내렸는데 차 스티커를 보니 경찰이었는데 SBI로 즉 주 정부의 감사요원이었다. 연방 감사요원은 FBI라고 한다. 그 경찰관이 나와서 적극 도움을 주셨고 저녁 시간인데도 우리를 보호하시기 위해서 도시 경찰 차가 올 때까지 함께 해주셨다. 참 감사한 분이었다.
식사도 못 하셨을 텐데. 어디라도 같이 가서 음식 대접이라도 해드리고 싶었지만, 사양하시고 집으로 간다고 하신다. 한 순간 당황이 되고 남편한테 연락해도 전화도 받지 않으신다. 한울께 연락해서 내가 있는 위치를 알려주고 아빠한테 픽업 하러 오라고 했다. 그러자 30분이 지난 후 남편이 도착하고 도시 경찰관도 왔다. 아.. 도움을 주신 경찰관님께 진심으로 감사했다. 그분은 아주 자연스럽게 내가 할 일을 한 것 뿌리라고 하셨다.
아. 여기서..중요한 점을 알려 드릴까 한다. 혹시 차를 타고 가다가 문제가 생기거나 교통사고가 나면 해야 할 일
첫 번째 일이. 시 경찰관을 기다려야 한다. 일단 경찰을 먼저 불러야 한다. 사고가 났을 때는 사고 서를 작성해야 한다.
둘째, 견인차를 불러야 한다.
미국은 차 보험이 철저히 되어 있어 차 사고가 날 때나 아니면 이런 예측 불가의 상황이 닥치면 견인차를 보험회사에 연락하면 그들과 계약을 맺은 곳을 연결해 준다.
셋째, 주변에 도움을 요청하라.
오늘 필자처럼 사고가 나면 그냥 차 안에 있으면 안 된다. 밖에 나와서 경찰이 올 때까지 도와줄 사람을 알아봐야 한다. 미국 사람은 도움이 필요한 사람을 모른척하고 지나가지는 않는다. 일리노이주 살 때는 눈이 많이 오는 날, 타이어 터졌었고 남편께 연락 두절이 되었던 때가 있었다. 그 순간 미국의 백인 아저씨가 다가와서 다 도와주셨다. 물론 돈을 주려고 했지만 받지 않으셨다. 작년 조카가 언어 연수로 잠시 필자의 집에 머물 때, 차 타이어 터졌을 때, 미국인 아저씨 도움을 받았는데 타이어를 갈아 주면서 돈을 요구했다는 이야기를 했다.
넷째, 평점 심을 잃지 마라.
아주 중요한 부분이다. 너무 초조해하지 말고 침착해야 한다. 사고가 크게 났더라도 아무도 다치지 않았다면 그것으로 감사하게 생각해야 한다.
다섯째, 영어를 할 때 자신감을 가져라.
사고가 날 때는 영어가 더 안 된다. 필자처럼 25년을 미국에 살지 않은 이상은 당황하는 순간이 된다. 이럴 때는 아주 단순한 방법이지만, 쉬운 단어로 알아 들을 수 있게 말을 천천히 해야 한다. 알아 들을 때까지 설명하라. 그들은 듣기 훈련을 받아서 단어 몇 가지만 이야기해도 눈치껏 알아듣는다.
여섯째, 통역사를 이용해도 된다.
미국에서 가장 편리한 서비스가 통역사를 부르는 것이다. 이 경우는 최대의 극단적 상황일 때 하는 것이 좋다. 미국에 살면서 통역사를 부른다는 자체가 부끄러움이다. 로마에 가면 로마 법을 따르라는 말이 있듯이, 그날에서 살려고 왔으면 언어를 배워야 한다. 언어가 즉 문화이고 그들의 삶이다.
그래서 오늘 도착한 견인차 운영을 하는 단체에서 알라의 차를 집까지 무사히 바래다주었다. 그래서 감사했다.

Like the title says, yes. As an experienced person who has gone through something you should never have to go through, I would like to write down the experience. You can think of it as an experience in a foreign country. Today was our youngest daughter Narin's birthday. Narin and her friend had a good time at the mall and we went to pick her up. The trouble begins now.
I'm driving and the red engine-shaped icon blinks. I felt this was unusual, but now I'm waiting for a traffic signal at an intersection, and this is an odd situation. The car died in the middle of the road. People didn't even know what had happened. I tried to get out and talk, but when I got out, I was nearly run over and killed by another car. After a few minutes of such fretting, another car was behind our car in the rear view mirror with his flashers on. I got out of the car and went to the man's car. When I got out of the car, I saw a sticker on his car showing he was a police officer, SBI, or the State Bureau of Investigation, the state's version of the FBI. The police officer came out and actively helped us and stayed with us until the city police car came to protect us even though it was evening. He was a very helpful man. It was a moment when I wanted to thank God that there was someone like this.
I knew he hadn't eaten, so I wanted to buy you something to eat, but he said he would go home and eat. I'm embarrassed for a moment, and even when I called my husband, he didn't answer the phone. I contacted Hanul and told him to come pick me up after telling him where I was. Then half an hour later, my husband arrived and the city police officer came. Oh... I thanked the police officer for his help. He told me that he did what he needed to do very naturally.
Oh, let me tell you the important points. What to do if you have a problem or a traffic accident while riding in a car.

Fourth, don't lose your cool. It's a very important part. Don't be too nervous and stay calm. Even if the accident was serious, if no one was hurt, you should be grateful for it.
Fifth, be confident when you speak English.
English is worse in the event of an accident. Unless you have lived in the U.S. for 25 years like me, you will become a pure whitehead when you are embarrassed. It's a very simple way to do this, but you have to speak slowly so that you can understand it with easy words. Explain until you understand. They are trained to listen and understand just a few words.
Sixth, you can use an interpreter. The most convenient service in America is calling an interpreter. In this case, it is better to do it in the most extreme situations. Living in the U.S. and calling an interpreter is a shame. As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans," If you come to live in the U.S., you must learn the language. Language is part of their culture and way of life.
So the tow truck arrived and safely took Ara's car home. I was grateful.
