When I drove to my dentist appointment today, the car radio was playing REM's song. I started to get excited about R.E.M.'s music. I almost forgot about this band for a while. So I want to introduce to you their sixth studio album called "Green"(1988). This is a very unique and special album for them because it has songs about political issues. The interesting part of the music is how they using the mandolin to create a guitar sound. It was a new experiment with sound. All the songs were written by the R.E.M members. They went on a 11-month world tour to promote this album. The commercialized single songs from this album are "Orange Crush", "Stand", "Pop Song 89", and "Get Up".
오늘은 치과 약속이 있어 운전하고 가는데 라디오에서 알이엠의 노래가 흘러나왔다. 필자는 알이엠의 음악에 대해서 흥분하기 시작했다. 이 밴드를 한동안 잊고 지냈었다. 그래서 그들의 1988년도 여섯번째 정규앨범인 "Green"을 소개할까한다. 이의 앨범은 특별하고 독특한것이 정치적 이슈를 담고 있었다. 음악적으로 흥미로운것은 만돌린악기를 기타사운드로 대용한점이 특이했다. 이것으로 실험적인 사운드를 만들어 내기도했다. 모든 노래들은 알이엠 그룹 맴버들에 의해서 작사되었다. 그들은 위의 앨범을 홍보하기 위해서 11개월을 세계 투어를 했다고 한다. 앨범의 곡을 싱글로 내놓아서 상업적으로 성공했던 노래가 "Orange Crush", "Stand", "Pop Song 89", 와 "Get Up"였다.

R.E.M. - Stand
Michael Stipe told Q magazine in 1992: "It's about making decisions and actually living your life rather than letting it happen. It surprises me when I walk by a parking lot and I've been walking by that parking lot for eight years but, for the first time, I look at it and say, My God! There's a parking lot! and I wonder why, for eight years, I've chosen not to look at it." Also, another way to look at this song is a direction where you are heading. I think that whichever way you interpret the song is up to you.
1992년 마이클 스티페는 큐 매거진에서,"이것은 당신이 살고 있는 삶에 일어나고 있는것에 대한 결정을 내리는것에 관한거랍니다. 주차장을 지날때마다 놀랄수 밖에 없었죠. 8년간을 주차장 주변을 걸어 다녔는데 처음으로 주차장을 걸갔죠. 그런 나를 발견하고선 말했죠. 오 하나님! 여기 주차장이 있었다니! 그리고 8년이라는 세월이 의문이 생겼죠. 내가 그걸 보기를 원하지 않았던것 같아요."라고 말했다. 또한, 다른 의미로는 당신이 가고자 하는 방향에 대해서 노래한것으로 보인다. 필자가 생각하기에는 어떻게 해석 하느냐는 당신에게 달려 있다고 본다.

R.E.M. - Orange Crush
"Orange Crush" was the number one song on the 1988 rock chart. It was a success for commercializing this sensational song. Orange Crush is orange soda but it refers to Agent Orange, a chemical used by the US to defoliate the Vietnamese jungle during the Vietnam War. It was later shown to cause cancer and birth defects. The critical lyrics talk to the listener about the side effects, but most people misinterpreted this song.
"Orange Crush"는 1988년도 락차트에서 1위를 기록했던 곡이였다. 상업적으로 성공했고 놀라운 노래였다. Orange Crush는 오렌지 소다를 의미하나 여기에서는 미국의 에이전트 오렌지(미국이 베트남전에서 사용한 고엽제) 화학제품을 베트남에 투하 한것을 말해주고 있다. 이것으로 인해서 암이나 진행되거나, 돌연변이 태아가 발생되었다. 치명적인 가사말은 듣는 이로하여금 부작용을 알려주었으나 많은 사람들은 이 노래를 잘못 해석하고 있었다.

It had an alternative rock sound, and it is exciting to listen to this song. "Get Up" makes me dance with this song. Let's get up and start a new day.

"Turn You Inside-out" makes my head spin. It was mixed with confusion and the sound of swirling. The background vocals really make you believe that someone is watching you.
"널 뒤집어 돌려 놓겠어"는 머리를 핑하게 돌게만든다. 음악은 혼란과 소용돌이가 섞여져 있었다. 백보컬은 당신이 지켜 보고 있다는것을 믿게끔 해준다.
R.E.M. - You are the Everything
This song uses the mandolin. It has a slow and sweet melody. "For you alone, You are the Everything" is what love yourself is. I like the phrase: "I look at her and I see the beauty of the light of music." It is a poetic way to say the lyrics. Live and love and fight for the world we live in.
이 노래는 만돌린 악기를 사용했다. 느리고 달콤한 멜로디였다. "너 혼자서는 네가 전부야"는 스스로를 사랑하라는 것이다. "그녀를 봤을때 음악의 빛과도 같은 아름다움을 보았지."라는 부분이 마음에 들었다. 이렇게 시적인 가사말이었다. 살며 사랑하며 우리가 살고 있는 세상과 싸운다.

R.E.M. was an American band formed in the 1980's and lasted until it was disbanded in 2011. They were an old band but the sound is so appealing to listen to. I know some music not everyone likes. This album is a typical Alternative Rock sound. Most of the songs are about political issues. After many years, listening to the old album does not sound that old to me. Still, in my mind, their music is fresh and full of excitement.
알이엠은 1980년도에 미국에서 구성되어 2011년도에 밴드가 해산된다. 그들은 옛날 밴드이지만 들으면 끌림이 있는 사운드였다. 모든이들이 공감할 수 있는 음악이 아니란걸 안다. 이 앨범은 얼티네이티브 락의 기본틀을 가지고 있다. 대부분의 노래는 정치적 이슈를 띄고 있었다. 수많은 세월이 지나도 오래된 앨범이라고 하지만 사운드는 오래되지 않았다. 여전히 내마음에는 그들의 음악은 흥분으로 가득차고 새롭게 다가왔다.
