Band Aid는 1984년 자선단체를 중심으로 유명한 영국과 아이리시 음악가들이 한곳에 모여서 에티오피아의 식량이 없어 굶주려 죽어 가는 그들을 돕기 위한 노래를 불렀다. 그들의 노래는 세계적으로 퍼지게 되고 앨범을 내놓자 마자 각광적인 인기를 얻음과 동시에 영국차트 1위를 장식하는 영광을 누리게 되었다. 그것도 자그마치 5주간 1위를 기록하는 신기루와도 같았던 노래였다. 그들의 앨범은 크리스마스 때에는 더 많이 팔리게 되었다고 할 정도로 많은 사람의 사랑을 받아 온 곡이다.
어떻게 해서 밴드 에이드라는 자선단체라는 이름으로 앨범을 내놓게 되었을까? 무엇이든 시작하는 사람이 있기에 할 수 있는 것이 아닌가 생각된다. 1994년 영국 BBC방송은 에티오피아의 기아로 인해서 많은 생명이 죽어 가고 있다는 안타까운 소식을 보도 하게 되었다. 이 장면을 티브이를 통해서 목격한 Bob Geldof는 방송사에 연락해서 자선기금을 마련 하겠다고 말한다. 영국 뉴웨이브 록밴드인 Ultravox의 Midge Ure께 연락하게 되어 위의 곡을 공동으로 작곡하게 되었다. David Bowie, Paul McCartney, all members of Big Country 그리고 Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes to Hollywood 레코딩을 할 수 없어, B면에다 백트랙으로 해서 다시 녹음을 했다고 한다. 그 정도로 많은 음악인이 대거 참여했던 앨범이었다. 한 마디로 음악인들이 하나로 뭉쳐진 그들의 파워를 보여준 셈이었다. 또한, David Bowie가 작사에 참여하기도 했다. 그는 1985년도 Band Aid Live 참여해서 노래를 불러주기도 했다.
Bob Geldof는 자선 기금마련을 위한 노래를 부른 그들을 칭하기를 Band Aid라고 이름을 지었다. 당시 80년대 팝계와 록계를 주름잡던 많은 음악인이 참여하여 신선한 충격을 주기도 했었고, 그들은 세계가 하나라는 의미를 다시 상기 시켜줬을 뿐 아니라, 위의 앨범을 통해서 소외된 아프리카의 작은 나라 에티오피아를 세계인들에게 알리기 시작했다. 앨범에서 나오는 전체 수익금은 아프리카 기아성금으로 보내졌다. 한 사람의 결심으로 말미암아 많은 음악인이 참여해서 감동을 낳게 했던 그들도 크리스마스를 알고 있을까?(Do They Know It's Christmas?) 진정 이웃을 사랑하는 것이 무엇인지 몸으로 실천한 사례가 아닌가 한다.
연말이 되면 자선냄비 앞에서 종을 울리고 있는 분들 앞에 그냥 지나치지 말고 한 푼이라도 돈을 넣어주는 인정을 보인다면, 우리가 사는 세상도 따스함으로 넘쳐 날 것이다. 언제나 불우하고 어려운 환경 속에서 힘들게 사는 이웃이 있다. 그들에게 올해의 크리스마스는 어떤 의미로 다가오고 있을까?
